Dressage Clinic Oct 25th & 26th

We are pleased to announce this weekend we are welcoming Canadian Team rider Karen Pavicic for a clinic at North Shore!
Karen has recently returned from a super successful European tour which culminated with her representing Canada at the World Equestrian Games. Karen has trained several horses to Grand Prix and represented Canada on the world stage for many years. She is currently 85th in the world rankings and its a real honor to have such a prestigious rider here to work with our riders!

The clinic will run from 9-12 on Saturday and 8-11 on Sunday in the lower arena. All are welcome to watch and cheer on our riders!

Boarders will be welcome to ride in the arena while the clinic goes on.

We will serve coffee and treats, feel free to bring something to contribute!

NSEC Parking Lot

Due to a high volume randoms parking in our parking lot as of late and preventing NSEC clients from parking, we will be enforcing our tow away policy rather strictly from next week on.

If you are a boarder at NSEC or ride anytime before 4pm during the weekdays, please email me the plate number for your vehicle ASAP to prevent any mishaps in us enforcing our towing policy.

Halloween Lessons

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The next big day we are looking forward to will be Halloween.

Due to kids setting off fireworks every Halloween in the park below us, we will be rescheduling the lessons from 4:30pm onwards on Friday, Oct 31st.

We will also be doing turn in early and closing the barn early. All windows will be closed in order to lessen the sounds from the park and all doors will be closed early as well. We would recommend to boarders to come as early as possible to ride for the day to lessen the risk of a horse spooking and injuries.

The barn will be closed directly after feeding, no later than 8:30pm.

To reschedule any lessons, please email me at allanda@wecreateriders.com

Lower Arena

We have had GT textile footing added to the lower ring this past Friday afternoon.  This footing will bind the sand, provide a better riding surface, cushioning and also prevent it from packing hard.

Due to this new footing, we now need to really look after the rings better in terms of manure management. Our staff cleans the rings each morning but by that time much of the manure has been trampled into the footing and cannot be recovered. Manure left in the footing causes the sand to pack hard and it is also the biggest cause of dust (full of pathogens). Instructors & helpers will be picking the manure up during lessons and we would like to ask that riders pick up any manure from their horse in the rings after their rides.

Hoof picks have been placed in the lower arena to clean out your horse's hooves at the end of your ride before you leave. This must be done after every ride to prevent the the new footing from becoming depleted prematurely.

We would also like to ask that horses not be allowed to dig any holes in the lower arena.

Thank you for your cooperation :)

Riding Off Property

Due to complaints about people riding their horses in the suburban areas outside NSEC and riders not cleaning up after their horses, we will not be asking that NSEC riders limit themselves to trails and parks only, when riding off property.

THIS MEANS NO RIDING TO THE CORNER STORE FOR SNACKS.

We want to make it clear that it is not appropriate to ride on the sidewalk through neighborhoods if you are not going to be able to remove manure properly. You cannot kick manure off the sidewalk and into the street in these areas, nor can you kick it into the bush or onto any grass area as these are usually private property and so we should stay clear of these areas when riding outside the barn.

Welcome to NSEC!

Hello and Welcome (or welcome back) to North Shore Equestrian Centre!

We'd like to take this opportunity to inform you of some of our policies and safety rules here at our riding facility.

Lessons

Lessons start Sept 2nd 2014.

Lessons are once a week from September to June. You should come early to allow yourself lots of time to groom and tack your horse (15 to 30 minutes is usually lots of time) so that you are in the ring on time for your lesson. Your lesson time is the time that you need to be in the ring and ready to go.

We will have helpers around for the more beginner classes as well as Allanda in the office Sundays thru Thursdays, so if you are having any troubles or are unsure of something, please don't hesitate to ask. We are all very friendly here and are happy to help.

Bridles (the hardest part): If for some reason you cannot find someone and you are unable to bridle your horse, don't panic. Please halter your pony and bring him to the ring with your bridle and your instructor will help you with this tricky task.

Lessons last 45 minutes and the students will need to untack their horse and groom them before leaving. Tack and brushes must be returned to the tack room and cleaned before putting them away neatly. Crossties used must be swept out and left clean, manure (poop) goes in the black garbage can in the crossties. Please double check that a halter or lead rope hasn't been left in the horse's stall, as this can be very dangerous for the horse if he gets tangled up in it.

Stalls

No more than 2 people in a stall at a time please. We don't want to overcrowd our ponies and make them confused.

Only ever enter a stall if it is your lesson time and you are entering the stall of the horse you are riding to tack him up. Otherwise please allow our horses some much deserved relaxation time during their breaks.

Make Up Lessons and Missed Lesson Policy

If a student cannot make a scheduled lesson, NSEC must be informed 48 hours beforehand by phone or by email. There will be no charge for the lesson missed, but the student must make up this lesson within 2 months of the lesson they are rescheduling, or there will be a miss charge of half the lesson cost.

The only exception to this rule will be for stable management classes, which must be made up during the same stable management week as the lesson they are rescheduling. If a student is unable to make up the lesson they have rescheduled within the 2 month period, a fee of half the group lesson rate will be applied to the student’s account for that lesson, also known as a “miss charge”.

For privates and semi-privates, 24 hrs notice must be given to NSEC if you cannot make a clss or there will be a full charge applied to your account for the missed lesson.

Quitting

If for some reason you cannot continue with the lessons, we ask for 2 weeks notice.

Holidays

We operate on all holidays EXCEPT for Labour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Office Hours
Sundays - Thursdays 8am-4pm

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. Otherwise everyone have a wonderful year of riding!

Friday, 15 August 2014

The lower arena is now finished and ready for riding.

The footing is still a little loose and can only be packed down to the perfect consistency by people riding on a regular basis, so do take care for the first few weeks of riding in the lower arena.

All the old sand has gone up near the upper arena to make some new paddocks that will hopefully be ready by September!

Barn Swallows

It's the time of summer when baby birds are getting shoved out of their nests and taught to fly. Sometimes it seems a little too soon and they might struggle on the ground for the day. If you find one of these little guys wondering around the best thing you can do for them is to find somewhere high to put them near where you found them. A ledge is best. This way they are out of Leo's reach and the parents can easily find them to keep feeding them. Remember, it's just a myth that if you touch a baby bird the parents will reject them because they smell like you, the parents are always happy to keep feeding them as long as they can find them.

Lower Arena

The lower arena at NSEC will be closed to riders Thursday, Aug 7th and Friday, Aug 8th in order to get the footing redone.

Camps will be running from 8:30am-4:45pm on these days, as well as lessons in the upper arena. Riding for camps on Thursday will take place on the trails, so the indoor arena will be available during the day and riding for camps on the Friday will likely take place in the indoor arena from 9:30am-11:30am and 2pm-4pm. Please try to schedule your riding around these times if you are concerned about space.

We would like to apologize for the short notice, but by the weekend the lower arena will have nice, new footing for us to look forward to!

Trail Etiquette

Just a reminder that if you are going to use the trails around NSEC, you must clean up after your horse.

These trails are multi-use trails and are enjoyed by all sorts of people doing recreational activities, we don't want to leave a mess for our neighbors!

This is especially important if you are riding through the cemetery. We must show respect and always make sure we clean up.

Manure can be kicked to the side of the path and out of the way. This means you will have to dismount, but that is one of the responsibilities of riding on the trails. Manure must be cleaned up immediately, not once you are your way back.

Remember, we don't want to get kicked off these trails, so lets do our best to keep them looking their best!

Summer & Trail Safety

And with this week we are half way through the summer. Who knew it would fly by so fast. Camps have filled up and have been going well, the weather has been beautiful the majority of the time and all the horses have been soaking up the sun and enjoying all the good summer vibes.

Just a reminder to be extra careful on trails. Accidents happen and we want everyone to be safe. Only go on trails you are familiar with and if you are exploring make sure to go with a buddy. Always try to tell someone at the barn where you are going and how long you think you will be going for. Take a cell phone with you and make sure you have a reliable contact you can call if anything goes wrong.

Words to Consider...

This is especially true when working with our equine friends. When leading a horse or walking into their stalls we should always walk with confidence even when we aren't feeling it. This helps show the horse that you are in charge and helps bring you and your equine friend closer together.

So remember, even if you are a little nervous, stand tall, square your shoulders and take charge :)

Helpers Needed for NSEC Summer Camps!

We need more helpers to help new students learn and continue their journey in the horseback riding world at NSEC!

Helpers should be ages 13 and up, level 3 or higher and be a current student of NSEC, however these rules can be waived if you get approval from both your instructor and myself.

Helpers work Mondays-Fridays, arrive at 9am and leave at 4pm with a break for lunch inbetween as well as cookies and a juice box each day.

Duties include: helping the instructor supervise children as they tack up, leading beginner riders in the ring and on trail day, grooming school horses and bathing them on sunny days, keeping the tack room clean and cleaning the crossties after every camp.

This year we have decided that volunteer hours can be used towards some extra lessons in the fall. For every week that you help out, I will give you a credit to use towards an extra group lesson during the year.

At the end of the summer during the last weekend of August, NSEC will host a pizza party to show our appreciation for all the summer helpers and a draw for a $50.00 gift card to Greenhawk will be held. For each week you help out your name will be entered into the draw, giving you more chances to win.

If you would like to sign up as a helper for summer camps, please email me your availability ASAP at allanda@wecreateriders.com

Trail Riding

We have been getting some complaints about manure on the trails in Inter-river Park.

As part of the community on the North Shore, we must remember that we share responsibility when it comes to keeping our trails clean. If we want access to these trails on nice days we need to treat them with respect and make sure we leave them as we find them.

That means cleaning up after our horses. If your horse passes manure while on a trail you must hop off and kick it off the pathways IMMEDIATELY. You cannot leave it there for when you are on your way back.

A while back Denise asked the district to add more boulders in the park so that we would not have issues when dismounting and then having to get back on again. Let's try and make this addition to the park useful for us and help to keep things clean and usable for other people in our community!

Bits & Pieces

Some of the blankets have returned! Please check if your's is back at the front of the office.

Summer camps are filling up fast, so be sure to get your forms in ASAP for camps. We have a few higher level camps started for this summer already and could use a couple more :)

I would like to ask that people STOP tearing off pieces of the daily horse schedule for notes! I need these schedules for our records and I am getting a little annoyed that I have to guess on stuff when entering information into the computer. If you need scrap paper, there is a whole pile of it beside the fax machine.

I have put up a few locker notes, if you are renting a locker and one of the notes has appeared taped to your locker door, please return to me ASAP.

Doing Up the Girth

image found on about.com

Just a quick reminder that for the comfort and health of our horses, girths should always be done up slowly and one hole at a time!

This prevents pinching and pain when the girth is done up, this also helps to prevent girth galls which are caused by pressure on loose skin caught under the girth.

If you are unsure on how to do up the girth in a proper fashion, please ask a helper or your instructor to show you the proper way to do this. They will be happy to answer your questions and give you a demo :)

That Time of Year Again...

It is that time of year again. And although it is raining right now, it is now warm enough that anything more than a light blanket and a rainsheet is too warm. Time to put away all the winter and extra blankets in storage!

If you would like to have them cleaned by Old Country Laundry, please bundle them up neatly and place them outside the office for pick up. Make sure to attach your name written clearly to any blankets, along with your phone number and what services you would like done, such as cleaning, waterproofing, ect.

Please help us keep the aisle ways clean and uncluttered by storing your extra blankets for the during the spring and summer!

NSEC Summer Camps 2014

It is that time again! Summer Camp registration at NSEC has started!

To download your camp forms please check out our website under Summer Camps

On a sadder note, I would like to remind our clients that own dogs and bring them up to the barn, ALL DOGS MUST REMAIN ON A LEASH AND ALWAYS BE CONTROLLED BY THEIR OWNER. Yesterday, one of our doggy friends had gotten into my rabbit's cage trying to play with her, causing Clover (the rabbit that lived on my porch) to have a heart attack and pass away.

For the safety of all the animals that share the barn, please adhere to NSEC's rules when it comes to your canine friends.
