Christmas Holidays at North Shore Equestrian Centre

The holidays are upon us and as snow begins to fall, I have been fielding many questions regarding scheduling over the holidays.

NSEC is closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day ONLY. All other days during the month of December run as usual unless otherwise noted by emails that will be sent out next week. It will be highly likely that lessons running Dec 23rd to Jan 4th will be moved to daytime hours, so please watch for emails regarding any schedule changes that may be happening to your regular lessons.

Dec 24th, 25th, 26th, 31st and Jan 1st NSEC will be closed early. The barn will be closed promptly after feeding on these days. If any boarders have any questions or concerns regarding these holiday hours, please feel free to contact me and we can work around any scheduling issues that may be causing any problems.

Students should note that lessons run as usual from September straight through to June. If a student needs to quit we will need 2 weeks notice.

If you are away for the holidays, please let me know ASAP and we can reschedule any lessons that are being missed for when you return.

NSEC would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

September 2013 Registration

Summer is almost over and September is creeping up on us pretty fast. I am working hard on the Fall schedule right now and as everyone starts to get back from their summer vacations we are seeing the spots filling up.

That said, I am still accepting registrations for the Fall season and have space on most days still available. I know there are many returning students who have yet to get in their registration forms. Please do this ASAP so that I can confirm classes and scheduling this coming week.

I am happy to announce that long time NSEC rider Lauren Woods will be taking the Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon teaching spots and long time NSEC rider Alexis Morton will be taking on the Sunday morning teaching spot for this coming year. NSEC is proud to be adding them to our fantastic teaching staff!

Summer Camps and Sunny Days at NSEC!

Well it's been a very fast and very busy start to the summer at NSEC.

We started our annual summer camps last week and Mr. Snowflake has been taken home to participate in his own summer work. I am happy to say that summer camps are almost full already for the entire summer and I'm sure we will be welcoming many new riders to NSEC come September.

Show season is upon us as well! We have exciting updates from the most recent Hunter/Jumper show last week and of course our lovely Dressage team is going to lots of shows as well, so make sure to stay tuned for updates!

From July 16-30th there will be no updates to the blog as I will be away in California for 2 weeks! I am very excited, but not sure what I will do without seeing all my horsie buddies for so long. During this time Pedro's owner, Brooke, will be house sitting for me and looking after emergencies at the barn. I'm not sure what I'd do without her!

Breezy is on the mend and has moved back over to the school side. Because he hasn't been in work for so long he has lost some muscle and looks a little skinny, but we will be getting him back up to working condition bit by bit! We hope to have him participating in a few summer camps and back to lessons in September.

We have also welcomed a few new boarders recently and look forward to a few more in the following weeks, so watch for those new faces at NSEC!

A friendly reminder that with the sunny weather, trail riding becomes almost required of most riders here. If you do go on a trail though please keep in mind that all trails are multi-use trails and we must be respectful of this. Do not go galloping around corners where no one can see if you are coming, do not use the soccer fields as gazing grounds and remember to clean up after your horse on the trail! We want to keep using these trails for years to come, it would be a shame if we were banned for not looking after them properly.

So here is to beautiful sunny weather and happy trails, fun summer camps and new faces around the barn! Lets have a wonderful summer at NSEC!

It's the last week of lessons and the time has come to start thinking about lessons in September.

We are sad to see Andrew Rommens step back from teaching for the upcoming season, but wish him luck on his upcoming endeavors in his new home out in Langley!

Please note that on the forms we still have to schedule instructors for our weekend lessons, rest assured though we will have appropriate and capable instructors for these time slots by September!

Boarders and Leasers, please see your preferred coach in regards to September lesson schedules.

Thank you for a wonderful season at NSEC! We hope to see everyone in September!

Study Guides and Stable Management Requirements

Due to a mis-communication the written tests will differ from what was sent out earlier this week.

However, all the material on the study guides will be on the test and remember, if you fail you will get the chance to re-study and re-do your test at a later date, so do not stress too much!

The levels included for testing at this time are EC Canada levels 1-6.

During the week of June 15 to 21, students will be doing stable management and instructors will be testing students on their required Stable Management knowledge first, then students will complete their written tests. Instructors will write up a riding assesment for those parents who would like one and I will email them out, but assesment write up must be requested BEFORE June 29th.

Thank you for your patience in this new level system, things will be a lot smoother next year.

A Little History

I received a card today that I wanted to share with everyone. This is from Kinaz's old owner, who would come and visit Kinaz on a regular basis to let him know that she would never forget about him. The card asks to thank EVERYONE at NSEC for all the love and care they gave Kinaz on a daily basis.

It was pretty amazing and endearing to read about all the places old Kinaz had been and all the things he got to do before he came to NSEC. He was a well traveled old boy with lots of history behind him! Thank you for sharing this with us Janine!

In Loving Memory: Kinaz

Today we are sad to announce the passing of one of our oldest and dearest, Kinaz.

Kinaz has been a longtime part of the NSEC and a key player for introducing many of our students young and old to a love of riding.

At the age of 32, Kinaz has proven himself over and over as a priceless school horse, but after many declining health issues (as is expected at such an old horsey age) we now have to say goodbye.

Kinaz will be missed by everyone at North Shore Equestrian Centre.

NSEC Dressage Team

Kat Southam and NSEC would like to extend a huge congratulations to Andrea Zaradic and her horse Midnite on a stellar performance at the Southlands Dogwood show this past Sunday. In their first test they scored for 6th place and in their second test they scooped 2nd place!

Also, Sandy Borek was a star groom and her mare Extravagant had a great first experience off the property. Kat is looking forward to riding Extravagant in competitions through the summer. Looking forward to more exciting show updates from the NSEC Dressage Team.

A Few Updates

Little Miss Penny will be heading on a little vacation to take a break from work and keep another horse company at a backyard barn tomorrow. She will be back soon though, so no worries!

Kinaz at the age of 32 yrs old is in semi-retirement here at NSEC. We have pulled him from the school horse field and he now shares a paddock with one of our older boardered horses during the day where he gets to relax and enjoy his final days with us at NSEC, coming up only for the therapeutic riding on Fridays.

Breezy is still on stall rest and may be for a bit longer yet.

The weather has been gorgeous lately and many people have been heading out on the trails to enjoy that early summer sunshine. We encourage everyone to remember that these are multi-use trails and that we MUST clean up after ourselves if we want to continue to have the privilege of using the Inter-River Park and Baden Powell trails.

Finally, with summer sneaking up on us rather quickly we would like to know if there is enough interest to have a year end show in June at NSEC. Please let me know ASAP by way of email at: !

New Instructors?

Some of you may have noticed that we have had some of our current NSEC students shadowing our instructors during lessons.

These girls are Lauren Woods, Kelly Donaldson and Alexis Morton. They are all practicing for their instructor certification testing later this month.

So we may be seeing some new instructors filling in and teaching summer camps this summer.

Let's wish all 3 of them luck!

Early Registration for Current NSEC Students

NSEC would like to offer early registration to our current students for the NSEC summer camps.

Current students who wish to participate in our week long 1/2 day summer camps will be matched to their current level and skill set over the summer. By doing this we hope to offer a camp more geared towards skills and knowledge that will be useful to students in our EC Canada Level program.

Camp outlines will look something like this (discussions and teachings will vary depending on level and experience):

First 20 minutes grooming and tacking up, horses will be expected to be spotless and ready for riding, the instructor will be going over any points he/she feels are being overlooked or need practice during this time

10 minutes warm up in the ring with the instructor, instructor may take this time to discuss the importance of warming up, ect.

45 - 60 mins riding lesson, working on current riding level.

10 minutes cool down in the ring with the instructor, instructor may take this time to discuss important issues in regards to riding, cooling, ect.

NSEC Show Day

Needless to say the very first show of the season for NSEC was an amazing success with a great turn out!

We'd like to thank all those who volunteered their time to help out with organizing and helping out on show day. A fun time was had by everyone and the weather was beautiful!

If anyone would like to submit pictures of the show please email them to and I will post them next week!

The next NSEC show will most likely be held in late May/early June, so if you weren't able to participate this time around watch out for the flyers for the next show closer to May!

Stable Management Week at NSEC

As everyone knows Sunday March 3rd is our first show of the season at NSEC, which marks the first Stable Management Week of the season!

March 4th to 10th will be Stable Management Week for ALL group school horse lessons at NSEC (this includes Adult classes as the instructors see fit).

For those who ride 2 or 3 times during the week or anyone who may have schedule a make up for a lesson previous to this week, please contact me ASAP to reschedule any extra lessons to a later date.

If you cannot make your regularly scheduled lesson and cannot do a make up during the Stable Management Week, there will be a miss charge applied to your account (as per NSEC policy. If you are unfamiliar with any of our policies please visit to review our policies).

Stable Management Week is very important to all students in order to put practical horsemanship knowledge into practice as well as review safety and ground manner training (all very important in the horse world). If you miss Stable Management you could also be missing valuable information that will be needed for testing at the end of the season in order to advance in level according to EC Canada Standards.

All students will meet their instructor in the office for the week of March 4th to 10th.

Winsum Schooling Show

North Shore Dressage had a super fun day at the Winsum Schooling Show last weekend.

Congratulations to Owen and Dino who had two very strong tests- despite Dino's over excitement! Good riding Owen!

Also congratulations to Denise and her horse Sashay who placed 2nd and 4th with a very respectable 66% score. Not bad for the first time out!

What a great start to the year!

Get Well Soon Mandy!

As some of you have heard already; this morning one of our instructors, Mandy Cragg, fell from her horse while riding in the lower arena.

Mandy was rushed to the hospital and treated swiftly and with great care. She is currently stabilized and will be in the hospital for the next week.

While we don’t know what caused the fall, we do know that Mandy and her family will be in our thoughts and that everyone at NSEC wishes her a fast and healthy recovery.

Feb 8th Update: Mandy is doing very well. She is being treated for a serious concussion and a non serious face injury that will heal quickly. She is not yet taking visitors, but her family will let us know as soon as she is ready for people to visit.

Feb 13th Update: Mandy has been released from the hospital and is now recovering at home. We expect to see to her back teaching within the next month!

Breezy & Coughing Schoolies

No Breezy is not gone. But he has been moved to the other side of the barn.

Breezy has a tendon injury and in order to heal properly, he will need to be on stall rest for quite a few months.

Because Breezy is the King of the herd in the field with the rest of the school horses, he can become very anxious when removed from his buddies and he has become very herd bound to them. In moving him away from the rest of the school horses we hope we can keep his mind off of them when they go outside without him. Moving him to the other side of the barn also takes him away from all the busy-ness of the lessons and helps him to relax. The stall he has been moved to has more light during the day as well providing him with lots of sunshine during his time inside!

As well as Breezy being off, we also have a few horses off for a cough that seems to be going around. When a horse has a cough no matter what the reason, they shouldn't be ridden as this could make the cough worse and compromise their immune system and lungs (you wouldn't run with a cough due to the risks of pneumonia, it's kinda like that). Don't worry though, it should pass once the weather gets a little damper. But until then, please bear with us as we work the schedule around our resting furry friends. With so many horses on a break you may not be getting your first (or second) choice of horses this week or next.

Happy 2013!

Well it's been a whirlwind of a holiday season. Christmas and New Years have come and gone and I don't know where the time went.

Hopefully everyone had a safe and happy holidays. I stayed with the horses on Christmas night to feed and close up the barn (nope, horses don't take holidays).

The New Years was rung in pretty quietly up here, which was a relief. No scared horses from strange noises.

And with a new year comes a new office for myself which is amazing. The office is now open and, although I am still setting things up, fully functional. I am a very happy office manager.

Now the only thing left to do is get my malfunctioning computer fixed, which will be happening this weekend.

This also means that I will be able to post more updates, you know, once I get my computer back. Hopefully on Tuesday.

Lessons are now back to normal, but those students who have decided not to continue until June have lightened the lessons and I will be reviewing the schedule and possibly having to combine classes where I am unable to fill in the gaps.

We have officially bought Angel for the school string, but will probably be sending Zeta home withing the next 2 weeks due to her stubbornness when it comes to deciding that she doesn't want to do something.

That's about it for now. Warm wishes & the best of luck to everyone for 2013!
